Eminent domain amendment supporters seek action by NC Senate
RALEIGH (AP) — Supporters of a constitutional amendment to further restrict land condemnation by governments want the Senate to consider the legislation before this year's General Assembly session ends.
The House already has approved bipartisan eminent domain legislation. And if the bill is approved state voters have a chance to have their say this fall.
The bill has been in a committee that hasn't met since 2001.
As proposed, the bill would allow voters to decide whether to change the state constitution to be sure government could take private land only for public uses and not for private development.
