EPA could have GenX health goal by summer’s end

RALEIGH (Star News) — Federal regulators could set a GenX health goal by the end of the summer, a N.C. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) official told a group of scientists Monday.

During the Secretaries’ Science Advisory Board’s third meeting, HHS’ Mina Shehee told the assembled group of experts that while the Environmental Protection Agency is working on a health goal, state agencies will continue crafting their own goals.

The Secretaries’ Science Advisory Board is tasked with advising DHHS and the N.C. Department of Environmental Quality on health goals for emerging contaminants such as GenX. Scientists on the board also expressed concerns about the compound’s impact around the Bladen County plant where it is used, including whether it can be inhaled.
