Eve Carson case murder trial to start in November

GREENSBORO — A man charged in the death of the slain student body president at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will go to trial on federal charges in November.

U.S. District Court Judge James Beaty said in a ruling Tuesday that 22-year-old Demario Atwater's trial will begin Nov. 2. A pretrial hearing will be held June 4.

Atwater faces five federal charges in the death of Eve Carson, including three that carry a maximum penalty of death.

Prosecutors allege Atwater and another man, Laurence Lovette, kidnapped Carson from her home and shot her to death the morning of March 5, 2008. The 22-year-old Carson was from Athens, Ga.

Lovette also faces state charges in the case, but he will not face the death penalty because he was 17 at the time of Carson's death.
