Event makes travel easier for children with autism
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A unique program at ILM seeks to help families who have children with autism, have an easier traveling experience.
At Autism Takes Flight, families get a chance to practice a full airport run-through, checking bags, obtaining a boarding pass and going through security. Director Amanda Rickard said the free event has proven to be beneficial over the past 3 years.
“Waiting, or transitioning, or new experiences and loud noises can all be really difficult for children with autism,” Rickard said.
Program organizers are Board Certified Behavior Analysts and use research backed strategies to prepare the family for travel and facilitate the event. Volunteers from UNCW’s Graduate Psychology program also stepped in to help make the event a success.
