Event to honor former battleship crew members
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Memorial day is just a few days away and some folks are coming to town to remind us all of the true meaning of the holiday.
A special event will allow visitors to meet with crew members who served on the USS North Carolina. 14 men will be aboard the ship for the special meet and greet hosted by AARP. They’ll be telling stories of life on the ship and their time during World War II.
WWAY caught up with former crew member Harlan Morgan today, and he said he’s excited to return to the ship.
“Aside from the birth of my daughters and marriages, this is one of the highlights of my life,” Morgan said. “I’m just looking forward to seeing as many as I can and seeing them again next year.”
AARP is sponsoring the event and associate state director Suzanne LaFollette-Black said it’s going to be special for all involved.
“This is an opportunity to hear their stories and also make sure their stories are held in legacy,” LaFollette-Black said.
There are currently 158 living former crew members of the USS North Carolina. Sunday’s event is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is free with battleship admission.
