Ex-Charlotte mayor’s lawyers seek sentencing delay
CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) — Lawyers for former Charlotte Mayor Patrick Cannon have filed a request to delay sentencing in his public corruption case.
Area media outlets report the motion filed on Monday says one or more witnesses are unavailable for that date, and asks for a new sentencing date of Oct. 13. The original sentencing hearing was scheduled for Sept. 25.
In their motion, Cannon’s attorneys say prosecutors have no objection to the date.
Cannon pleaded guilty in June to taking more than $50,000 in bribes from FBI undercover agents. An affidavit in the case says Cannon sought more than $1 million in kickbacks during a meeting in his office.
Cannon was arrested last March and resigned that day. He faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
