Exercise on Thanksgiving? How about Turkey Trotting?

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — You may have already had Thanksgiving dinner…or perhaps you’re just getting started. No doubt, though, you’ll be eating more than normal. So, some folks burned off some calories in advance of the big meal. Hundreds of families came out for a 2.4 mile run or walk known as the Turkey Trot.
This is the first Turkey Trot for the Stevens family, and they hope to be part of many more to come.

“Well I’m starting a new tradition with my daughters. We’re going to come out here and do the Turkey Trot,” Carrie Stevens said.

Just before we could ask any more questions, it was time for the race. Runners and walkers quickly lined up and then quickly rushed out. The Stevens set out with a smile…on their way to a new family tradition. Violet in the stroller, and Zoe running next to mom, a few minutes in and the Stevens were looking great. About 30 minutes later, all three made their way to the finish line, each with grins on their faces.

“It was fantastic what a wonderful way to start thanksgiving. There’s so much to be thankful for,” Stevens said.

As for little Zoe who toughed it out…”lot, lot, lot of fun!”

She had a blast, making momma proud.

“I love the fact that she showed me how strong she can be and that she’s tough and that girls are awesome,” said Stevens.

Organizers of the event say its stories like the Stevens’ that makes all the hard work worth it.
People bring their families from out of town, their dogs, their kids, and their relatives.

“We’re very blessed we’re very happy to have such a large turnout,” said Russ May from Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity.
