WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — He has 20 plus years of experience in the non-profit world and his organization has more than 30 awards all linked to programs he’s helped lead.
WWAY’s Daniel Seamans introduces us to a man who is bridging the gap between kids and community issues. Daryl Dockery is our Extraordinary Person of the Week.

“When I came up with the name ‘WRAAP‘,” Daryl Dockery told Daniel Seamans, “I wanted something that would identify with today’s youth. I wanted something easy to remember. One syllable, but had some connectivity.”

And then it hit him in the middle of the night.

“Believe it or not,” Dockery continued, “I was lying on my floor at night and came up with the list of things that I wanted to name this organization and I saw it come out to fruition. Wilmington Residential Adolescent Achievement Place, I said that’s it, and that’s how it got started.”

In 2007, Daryl Dockery, an expert in non-profits, opened the doors to WRAAP. The organization offers after school and outreach programs that give at-risk children something to focus on in New Hanover County.
It’s a mission of inspiration to keep kids out of trouble.

“It was all based on responding to the needs of the courts, the schools, the parents, the youth, and how we can address community issues,” he said.

Daryl has spent many years working the non-profit circuit and uses those contacts to bridge educational and social gaps.
Volunteers from UNCW and Cape Fear Community College help tutor and coach and inspire the girls and boys.
By the way, this guy is a UNCW graduate and his late night idea has
“When you have a place where the kids get a lot of positive reinforcement, they get a chance to model appropriate behavior, they see the staff, people who are there day in and day out, they aren’t transitioning out. We’re here.”

Here. Making a positive difference in the community. And that Daryl Dockery, is part of the reason why you are extraordinary.
