EXTRAORDINARY PEOPLE: The Hero on the Hardwood

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Being a good parent is extraordinary in itself, there is no debating that. But this week we’re highlighting a Wilmington man who is parent and also a role model to countless kids in the Cape Fear. He’s also President of the Wilmington Sea Dawgs. Demetrius Brown is a hero on the hardwood and that makes him our Extraordinary Person of the Week.

“You going to say hello to all the Wilmington folks?” he joked to the cameras as he held his 2 month old. Demetrius Brown is a proud daddy with a baby girl in his arms. He also has a six year old boy drawing national attention.
“He has a natural passion for the game,” Brown said. “A natural, he picks it up with the greatest of ease.”

Our own John Rendleman has witnessed that greatness as seen in a 2014 report he did on Josiah Brown. “Josiah can go behind the back, heck, he can even use the cross over dribble with players twice his size,” you hear John say in the sports feature.

But this go around we’re highlighting dad, President of the Wilimington Sea Dawgs professional basketball team and mentor to kids all over the Cape Fear through basketball clinics.  You’ll find he’s doing more than teach the game. Brown is teaching life.

“My message is you got to obey your parents, that’s the first thing I teach our kids,” Brown said. “You got to honor your father and your mother.”

Brown says he also tells the youth in the community to listen to their teachers and that great things happen when you do.

He’s also trying to bring the community together with the Wilmington Sea Dogs. “The talent level(of teh Sea Dawgs) is great as far as playing the game of basketball. But for me personally, what I feel is missing is that ‘fan” interaction and it’s what I’m putting all my heart and effort into”

One thing is for sure. Both on and off the court, Demetrius Brown is a hero on the hardwood and that’s Extraordinary.
