EXTRAORDINARY PEOPLE: The Port City Parachuter

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — First time Daniel Seamans skydived, he landed in the middle of a corn field up to his ears in stalks. Our Extraordinary Person of the Week is a little more talented on the touchdowns. Alexandra Deets is a Wilmington native. She’s brilliant when she takes the leap. She is the Port City Parachuter.

” So I walked up to the edge of the plank,” Alexandra Deets told Daniel Seamans, “stood with my back to the openess, waved to everyone, put my arms out in a T and fell backwards.”

Dropping out of a Chinook helicopter is a thrill seekers dream. Wilmington’s Alexandra Deets is living it.

“How many jumps?” Daniel asked. “About 850,” Alexandra replied.

One of those was into an NFL stadium. “Met Life Stadium was the most challenging but also the most fun because of it,” she said. “It was a Jets Jaguars game.”

This North Carolina girl has her own touchdown on the football field at Met Life Stadium.

Alexandra just graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. “My grandpa went there, he was class of ’61”, Alexandra said. “That’s how I heard about it. Both my parents were in the military(too).”

It was at the academy, a few years ago, that she fell WITH grace. “It was the 2nd semester of my freshman year at West Point, (I) made the team, spring break was the first time I jumped, so three and a half years ago,” she said.

Alexandra says she is going to be a military pilot. She wants to be a Chinook helicopter pilot.

She’s also going to be competing in the World Parachuting Championships this September after earning a slot on the United States team just weeks ago.

“One of the competitions is classic accuracy so we land on this inflatable but we’re aiming for something the size of a dime, with our heel,” Alexandra said of the challenge.

She nailed it on the first time during the nationals, earning her the spot on the US team.

The sky is the limit with this Port City Parachuter, following in her family’s footsteps while spreading her own wings.

And THAT, Alexandra Deets, makes you Extraordinary.
