FBI, Brunswick Sheriff’s Office holding active shooter drill at middle school
BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — This week, School Resource Officers with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office will train with the FBI to respond to an active shooter.
The training will take place at Cedar Grove Middle School in Supply on Wednesday and Thursday.
Neighbors may see an increase in the number of law enforcement officers in the area as part of the training exercise. All tactical scenarios will take place inside the school and will be closed to the public.
The Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training program, or ALERRT, is part of a training strategy developed by the FBI in the wake of mass shootings across the country.
ALERRT has trained more than 60,000 law enforcement first responders in a response protocol adopted by the FBI as the national standard for special agent tactical instructors. The training includes classroom instruction, as well as tactical scenarios.
Last month, the Brunswick County courthouse in Bolivia closed early so the Sheriff’s Office and court officials could hold an active shooter drill there.
