Feds indict man deported three times, found in New Hanover Co.

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Federal prosecutors say a grand jury has indicted a Honduran man found in New Hanover County, who has been deported from the United States three times.

Denis Joel Gutierrez-Rivas, 34, is one of 15 people indicted on illegal reentry charges, according to a news release from the US Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina.

The other suspects include 11 people from Mexico, two from Guatemala and one each from El Salvador and Honduras. Two of them were found in Johnston County, while the rest were found in Wake County.

Gutierrez-Rivas and 12 of the other suspects face maximum penalties of two years in prison, a $250,000 fine and supervised release after prison.

Investigators say two of the other suspects were previously deported after felony convictions and face tougher penalties if convicted again.
