“FIFI” coming to Wilmington during Airpower History Tour

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A flying ‘Superfortress’ is coming to Wilmington International Airport.

Organizers say “FIFI” is one of only two flying B-29s in the world and will be landing in Wilmington June 16th-18th.  The event is part of the Airpower History Tour.  Joining FIFI is the T-6 Texan.

The Commemorative Air Force says the Boeing B-29 Superfortress, first flown in 1942, began active service in 1944. It was designed as a replacement for the older B-17s and B-24s, having the longer range and greater bomb loads necessary for operations in the World War II Pacific theater. The B-29 was also used in the Korean War in the early 1950s and was a staple of the U.S. Air Force until the late 1950s.

Ground tours are $10 for adults, $5 for kids 11 thru 17, and children age 10 and under free. Price includes B-29 cockpit tour whenever the aircraft is available. For flights, click the ticket link to book online and reserve your spot.

ORGANIZER’S NOTE: Attending aircraft subject to change due to availability, weather, or maintenance.
