Garry Bishop took over the football program at North Brunswick High School in 1993 replacing Gary Baldwin. On Friday Bishop announced that he'll be stepping down after more than two decades of roaming the sideline in Leland.
Earl Smith is back. He's returning to New Hanover High School as the head football coach of the Wildcats replacing Kevin Motsinger, who resigned last month. Smith also once resigned as the New Hanover head football coach.
Hoggard's loss is Ashley's gain. Hoggard defensive coordinator Jeff Turner was officially named head football coach on Friday at Ashley High School. Turner tells WWAY he's excited about building a program. It's a challenge he's willing to tackle, but he knows the results won't happen overnight.
2014 was a season to forget for the Ashley High School football team. The Screaming Eagles did not win a game. Two weeks ago head coach Mike Propst stepped down. It didn't take long for Ashley to find a replacement for Propst. The Screaming Eagles will introduce Jeff Turner as their new head football coach on Friday morning. Turner is currently the defensive coordinator at Hoggard.
Kevin Motsinger has decided to leave after nine years as the head football coach of the New Hanover Wildcats. This was a surprise announcement that caught the Wildcat community off guard due to the success Motsinger had during his time at New Hanover. Ashley High also has an opening for a new head football coach. Mike Propst, after a winless season in 2014, won't return for a second season.
Friday marked the return of Chasity Melvin to WWAY's Full Court Press. The NC State Hall of Famer made a guest appearance on Friday. This season's analyst, Kevin Schneider, had a previous basketball commitment to fulfill. We showcased a slew of basketball action on the Full Court Press. This included game action from Hoggard-New Hanover, Whiteville-East Columbus and much more including another football state championship for Wallace-Rose Hill.
Undefeated Hoggard met undefeated New Bern on Friday night in the 4-A East Finals. New Bern scored on the first play from the scrimmage and the Bears never looked back. Check out our game highlights of New Bern's win along with Wallace-Rose Hill's victory over James Kenan.
The Hoggard Vikings will hit the road on Friday to face the New Bern Bears in the eastern title game for 4-A football. Both teams enter the game undefeated. The winner will advance to the state finals on Friday, December 12.
Round 3 high school football state playoff action is complete. Hoggard will be moving onto the east finals after an impressive, but close win over Scotland County. Whiteville was knocked out of the 1-AA state playoffs on Friday after leading at the half against Swain County. Plus more including scores, highlights and state playoff matchups for next week!
