First round playoff action is over for high school football. Despite the cold weather we had our camera crews in playoff mode on Friday night in order to cover the local teams that have football state championship aspirations.

The North Brunswick Scorpions finished the 2014 regular season with a 6-5 record after winning their last two games in convincing fashion. In the regular season finale the Scorpions defeated East Duplin 26-7. We recognized North Brunswick on Wednesday with the WWAY Farm Bureau Insurance at Mayfaire Team of the Week award. It'll be the final team of the week presentation in football this year.
The pairings are now locked in for the 2014 high school football state playoffs. Several area schools have been awarded a home game for first round play. Some teams will have to open on the road. A few of our local football squads missed out on extending their season.
The 2014 high school football regular season concluded on Friday night. Whiteville captured the regular season crown in the Three Rivers Conference. We had highlights from the Wolfpack's win over South Columbus along with coverage from two key matchups in the Four County Conference: Wallace Rose Hill vs. Clinton and East Bladen vs. West Bladen. Highlights of Saturday's UNCW men's basketball exhibition game vs. Catawba and a profile of junior point guard Craig Ponder will be featured on the debut of "The Kevin Keatts Show" scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 9, on WWAY-TV 3 and The CW Network.
The South Columbus football team lost their first four games of the 2014 regular season. The Stallions have been able to make a tremendous turnaround after making a few adaptations to their offense. As a result they've won five of their last six games. We made a trip to Stallion territory to honor South Columbus with the WWAY Farm Bureau Insurance Mayfaire Team of the Week award.
We decided to be creative on Friday's 5th Quarter on WWAY. In fact Ron Burgundy made a special appearance, flying in all the way from San Diego. It's certainly worth watching if you didn't watch the 5th Quarter live on Friday night.
The first round of the soccer playoffs concluded on Wednesday night all around the state. The majority of our local squads won. Winners advance to the second round of the state playoffs later this week. Plus, we checked in with former UNCW Seahawk basketball standout Adam Smith on Wednesday. Smith now plays basketball at Virginia Tech.
Whiteville High currently sports a five game winning streak in high school football. They've outscored their opponents 241-28 in their last five games. They're also alone in first place in Three Rivers Conference with perfect 5-0 league mark. That all adds up to Whiteville being recognized as this week's WWAY Farm Bureau Insurance at Mayfaire "Team of the Week."
