The annual New Hanover - Hoggard football rivalry will be renewed on Friday night at Scott Braswell Stadium. We caught up with both head coaches in order to get their take on the cross town showdown.
On Wednesday we honored the West Bladen Knights with our team of the week award. West Bladen is off to an impressive 4-1 start this season. The Knights defeated Union 50-21 last Friday.
Week 6 of the high school football season is complete. Once again we had an action packed 5th Quarter. In fact Friday marked the first night of conference play for most of the teams in our region.
Ashley High School's football team won't have its starting running back when the Screaming Eagles travel to South Brunswick Friday night.
West Brunswick defeated North Brunswick last week in high school football. It was the second win in a row for the Trojans. On Wednesday we recognized West Brunswick with the WWAY Farm Bureau Insurance at Mayfaire Team of the Week award.
On the 5th Quarter we showcased a slew of games from Friday night. This included highlights from Scotland County's win over New Hanover. We also featured New Hanover's heartfelt gesture before the contest to honor Scotland County's standout quarterback who recently fractured his skull in an ATV accident.
New Hanover High doesn't shy away from a tough non-conference football schedule. The Wildcats travel to Laurinburg on Friday in order to play perennial power Scotland County. New Hanover head coach Kevin Motsinger told us on Thursday that he's more concerned with his team's play than the Scots. On Thursday we also checked out local soccer and volleyball action. Plus more!
Trask defeated East Columbus last week in high school football. It was the second win in a row for Trask. The Titans previously hadn't won two games in a row since 2010. We're recognizing Trask with the WWAY Farm Bureau Insurance at Mayfaire Team of the Week award.
The Ashley Screaming Eagles overcame an early deficit to take the lead in the second half against White Oak on Monday night, but the Vikings prevailed in the end against Ashley. On Monday we also featured former New Hanover football standout Trevon Brown. The East Carolina freshman wide receiver caught a touchdown pass over the weekend against nationally ranked Virginia Tech.
Friday's 5th Quarter was action packed despite the fact we kept our eye on the weather all night long. The first half of the Hoggard game was clearly a spectator's delight. It was a mixture of dynamic plays combined with a bit of intrigue. We have a lengthy recap of the Hoggard game. Unfortunately, it'll go down as a no contest.
