Final US Senate debate features underdog
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)– The third and final scheduled debate for the US Senate seat held by Democrat Kay Hagan was once again a jab-trading event. However, Thursday’s showdown in Wilmington featured the underdog, who finally got a chance to take the stage.
The issues debated were the same. The main topics included gay rights, income inequality and minimum wage, beaches and waterways, Ebola protection and also other threats to the United States. But there was one main difference in this final debate: the Libertarian candidate.
“Actually,” Sean Haugh said, “I think the divide is more between the political class and the real world, and I think I appealed more to the people in their daily lives.”
Tucked between two politicians is Libertarian party candidate for North Carolina’s US Senate seat Haugh, the pizza delivery man.
“People like myself are trying to make a living for our families,” Haugh said of being the underdog in the race.
No matter what poll you look at, he’s more than a long shot, though he is in the race. And in this third and final debate, he found himself caught in the middle of motives.
“Both of my opponents really enjoyed the opportunity to go afield into other questions or issues to repeat their own talking points,” Haugh said. “I think it’s real important if I want to represent people to actually listen to them and to actually respond to exactly what is asked instead of just trying to sell them what I want to sell them on.”
Republican NC House Speaker and challenger Thom Tillis, running a very tight race with Democratic incumbent Hagan, defended his repetitive slams.
“I didn’t personally attack anybody,” Tillis said after the debate, “but I am attacking policies that are destroying jobs and making the nation less secure.”
We wanted to ask Sen. Hagan the same question, but she did not speak with the media following the moderated debate. A spokesman said her words during the debate spoke for themselves.
The election is Tuesday, Nov. 4.
