Fire at Hickey’s office now criminal investigation
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Investigators say the fire at a Wilmington medical office owned by a former candidate for New Hanover County Commission has now been ruled an intentionally set fire.
Investigators say the fire broke out at Port City Orthopedics on Oleander Drive in the early morning hours Tuesday. Firefighters say they were able to extinguish the flames just before 3:30 a.m.
Fire crews say damaged is estimated at $350,000. The office is owned by Dr. Derrick Hickey.
When reached for comment Wednesday afternoon, a spokeswoman with the Wilmington Police said there were no additional details.
Officials say one firefighter was treated on the scene and then taken to the hospital, but he has since been released.
