Fire damages Wilmington Habitat for Humanity home

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – A fire caused an estimated $40,000 worth of damage to a Habitat for Humanity home this morning.

WFD Battalion Chief David Hines says the call came in just after 6 a.m.  When fire crews arrived at 509 Hopes Springs Court, they saw smoke and flames coming from the home.

Firefighters found a bedroom and belongings on fire.  They quickly put out the flames.

Hines says the people inside got out of the home, no one was hurt.

Hines says the home was equipped with a residential fire sprinkler protection system, but the system did not activate because there was no water source.  This system was designed to get water from the home, but Hines says since there was no house source,  the system could not operate.

The fire remains under investigation.
