Fire officials on alert due to weather

Our current blustery weather has fire officials on high alert for any potential brush fires.

Fire signs outside stations have been changed to a “very high” risk status to make the public aware of the danger. Officials say our current weather is creating a perfect recipe for a dangerous fire to get out of hand.

Matt Saunders of New Hanover County Fire and Rescue said, “When we have these high winds and low humidity, the vegetation tends to dry out and be more prone to woods fires. Just use caution when you burn. Always have a water hose in place and burn in small piles.”

There is no burn ban for New Hanover County at the moment, but fire officials are recommending putting off any burning until conditions improve.
