WFD: Cigarettes to blame for apartment fire
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington fire crews put out a fire at an apartment complex overnight.
It happened after midnight in the 3800 block of Portofino Court, where officials said flames were coming from the second floor when crews arrived at the scene. Firefighters said about eight units were affected, and the American Red Cross is helping people who are displaced.
A WFD spokesman said of the eight united affected, four were not damaged but were without power. He said the occupants of those units will return once power is restored.
The spokesman said improperly discarded smoking materials were to blame for the blaze. He also said one resident had a minor burn but refused treatment.
