Firefighters spend Christmas serving the community

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — While many celebrated Christmas, it was just another day for Wilmington fire fighters when it comes to work.

“We work a lot of holidays, so I think you get used to it pretty quickly,” said Kyle Nelligan a Wilmington fire fighter. “There’s really no difference in what we do here on Christmas day or Thanksgiving or New Year’s or than we do on any other day.”

So it’s business as usual but Nelligan did get to have some special family time before having to go into work.

“Luckily we have some of the guys that don’t have young kids that hold over in the morning so I was able to wake up this morning, with my kids, open up the presents, have breakfast and kind of enjoy the quick moment of a normal Christmas before I had to come in so that was nice,” said Nelligan.

For some who are farther from home like Nicholas Shepard, it’s good to have a group of guys to share the holiday with.

“My family is back home in Swansboro but coming out here I have basically all these guys that they are like family to me,” said Shepard.

So people can rest assured that this fire station family is looking out for their families.

“It’s nice for the community to know we are here and we are basically four to five minutes away from any area in the city.”
