Fireman’s Freedom Competition promises fun and honor
SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — Firefighters are getting ready for some friendly competition in Southport as part of the annual North Carolina 4th of July Festival.
The Southport Fire Department is once again hosting the 34th Annual Fireman’s Freedom Competition on Saturday, July 1st from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Since 1984, The City of Southport Fire Department has invited local fire departments to compete in the N.C. 4th of July Festival Fire Fighter Freedom Competition.
But it’s not just something fun to watch. The event tests the teamwork of the departments while paying homage to training and firefighting methods of the past. Organizers say a perfect example is the bucket brigade that is part of the competition. It was the method of extinguishing fires until the invention of the hand pumped fire engine. There is a tremendous amount of teamwork and physical endurance that is needed to complete this duty.
Some of the other events include the Ladder Climb, Tanker Tug, Command Post, and Barrel Push. There are plenty of Fire engines, ladder trucks and equipment on display and the firefighters are happy to answer any questions from the public. There will also be vendors and water sprinklers and activities for children.
The competitive events will be help on location at the Southport Fire Substation on 111 E. Nash Street, Southport, NC.
