Fisherman finds body washed up at Topsail Beach

TOPSAIL BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Topsail Beach Police are investigating an apparent drowning after a fisherman found a body Thursday afternoon.

Police Chief Samuel Gervase says the body of Matthew William Giaccone, 29, washed up at the Godwin Avenue Sound Access.

Gervase says the medical examiner told him the cause of death was drowning, but drugs were likely involved. They are waiting on the toxicology results.

Giaccone was from Cornelius, NC and had gotten a ride from the VA medical center in Salisbury to Topsail Beach on October 23.

Gervase says Giaccone had just gotten out of prison in May and had his parole transferred to North Carolina. Gervase believes Giaccone was in the area looking for work.

There was no evidence of foul play.
