‘Flamingos for a Cause’ helps raise money for two local non-profits

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A flock of plastic flamingos has taken over a street corner in front of Wrightsville Beach Brewery on Oleander Drive.

The nearly 100 pink flamingos are helping to raise money for two local non-profits — ‘She Rocks’ and ‘Access of Wilmington’.

Each bird has been purchased by a donor who is honoring a friend or remembering a loved one.

The campaign was organized by the Wilmington Central Rotary Club, who say they’re happy to see their idea be so successful.

“We’ve enjoyed the project,” club president Louise McColl said. “We’ve enjoyed looking at when people do it in honor of or in memory of,  you know what they write for the tribute part. So that’s been interesting too.”

“What they’re doing is phenomenal,” Access of Wilmington program coordinator Samantha Wang added. “We’re so appreciative of a community that supports us like that. Their funding is going to help us with all of our day-to-day expenses.”

The flamingos are scheduled to remain on the corner through early March.
