Follow-up on this weekend’s fatal shooting in downtown Wilmington

The family of a murdered Wilmington man is speaking out. Emmit Irving, or Cinque, as his friends and family know him, was shot Saturday night in front of his Grace Street home. Irving's friends say he had been repeatedly threatened by gang members. They say he was not in a gang himself, and was a family man, devoted to his 17-month-old daughter, Jada. Family members say they knew Blood gang members were making threats against Irving. The family says they think they know who did this, but would not reveal names. Irving moved to Grace Street about six months ago, and according to his family, he had to pay Blood gang members $1,500 a week to live on that side of town. When asked why, they said they did not know. The family says it repeatedly asked for help from police to protect Irving, but it never came. Ahneekah Salley, Irving's cousin, said, "I mean, it's just sad. Because we went for help and we didn't get anything we didn't get nothing. He's gone now and we went to the authorities for help." Irving was gunned down in front of his home just before midnight on Saturday. Police say Irving was approached by the shooter as he got out of his car. A Wilmington police spokesperson says a team of investigators is handling this homicide, but, they have had difficultly getting information. So far, no arrests have been made. Also, they say they can't verify Irving's aunt's calls for protection.
