Former assistant police chief describes being fired
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (AP) — A former assistant police chief in Mocksville says he was at home sick when the man who was promoted over him arrived at his house to tell him he had been fired.
The Winston-Salem Journal reports former Maj. Ken Hunter testified in federal court that he was at home on Dec. 29, 2011, when Daniel Matthews knocked on his door and handed him a letter saying he had been fired. Hunter said another officer stood nearby with his hand on his gun.
The letter came from Chief Robert Cook, who has since retired.
Hunter and two other officers have filed a lawsuit claiming they were fired in retaliation for contacting the N.C. Attorney General’s Office and the Governor’s Office with their concerns over how the department was being run.
