Former Azalea Festival Belle turns 98 years old

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A former Azalea Festival Belle will celebrate her 98th birthday this weekend. Audrey Woodall has lived in Wilmington for most of her life and she’s no stranger to the Azalea Festival.

“This is a great time to have a festival. Everybody enjoys it. I remember the first festival with Jacqueline White. I was here to see that,” Woodall said.

While she saw the first Azalea Queen be crowned she had a chance in the spotlight herself. Woodall says in the late 1950s she rode on an Azalea Festival float as a Belle.

“Oh it was great. I was sitting up there smiling like one of the queens. So I enjoyed it,” Woodall said.

Jan Waite, Woodall’s niece, says she loves to hear these stories when she visits her aunt.

“She really is an icon for this city and has loved her life here. Just really full of life that’s why she looks so good at her age,” Waite said.

Woodall’s 98th birthday is Saturday.
