Former UNCW swimmer killed in mountain climbing accident
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A former UNCW swimmer has died while mountain climbing in Washington over the weekend.
A university spokeswoman says Richard “Grey” Liston attended UNCW from 2004-2007. He was a member of the school’s swimming team.
KATU-TV in Portland, OR, reports the 28-year-old Portland resident died after a fall on Mount Olympus Saturday morning. Another climber at the park called 911 around 7:45 a.m. to report they saw someone fall, according to Barb Maynes with Olympic National Park.
Maynes says Liston of Portland was climbing with a companion near the summit on the east face of the mountain when he fell into an area of rocks and glacier. One of the witnesses was a paramedic and was able to get to Liston and confirmed he had died.
