Former WWAY GM, ad exec Joe Schlegel dies

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A man who got his start in local television in the 1950s has died.

Joe Schlegel was a part of the WWAY family for years. He worked as both the sales manager and general manager at the station. He left in in the 1990s to start his own advertising agency with his son.

During his time at the station, he did everything from setting up commercials to running cameras.

Schlegel died this afternoon at Lower Cape Fear Hospice from complications of a stroke.

He was 84 years old.
