Former police chief charged with murder released

A former North Carolina Police Chief charged in the murder of a Camp Lejeune marine 36 years ago has been released from jail on a $350,000 bond.

57-year-old George Hayden was arrested in September and charged in the 1972 death of Marine Sgt. William Miller.

Hayden used to be Police Chief in Cape Carteret and Belhaven. Hayden and 58-year-old Vickie Babbitt are charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in Miller’s death.
