Former South Brunswick High School janitor dies in jail cell

The South Brunswick High School janitor who admitted to molesting a special needs child in 2007 was found dead in his jail cell Tuesday night.

A Brunswick County detention officer found 77-year-old Collis Hewett unresponsive in his cell around 10:00 p.m. EMS pronounced him dead at the scene.

Hewett had been in jail for a little more than a week for violating his probation.

The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the cause of his death. His body was sent to Jacksonville for an autopsy.
