Free disaster preparedness classes for seniors begin July 17 in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Older adults in the Cape Fear region will have the opportunity to learn how to prepare for emergencies through a free Disaster Preparedness Education Series beginning July 17.

The MLK Community Center and Davis Community Center, in partnership with AARP North Carolina, are hosting the series to help active adults prepare for disasters, stay informed during severe weather and safely recover afterward.

Sessions will cover a variety of emergency preparedness topics, including creating emergency plans and supply kits, receiving weather alerts, preparing meals during power outages and accessing recovery resources after a disaster.

The series will feature presentations from the American Red Cross, National Weather Service, Food Bank and Catholic Charities, and the New Hanover Disaster Coalition.

The schedule includes:

  • July 17, 2:30 p.m. — Disaster Preparedness for Seniors at the Davis Community Center
  • July 28, 10 a.m. — Disaster Preparedness for Seniors at the MLK Community Center
  • Aug. 21, 10:30 a.m. — Communication During Storms at the Davis Community Center
  • Aug. 25, 10 a.m. — Communication During Storms at the MLK Community Center
  • Sept. 4, 10:30 a.m. — Cooking Without Power at the Davis Community Center
  • Sept. 22, 10 a.m. — Cooking Without Power at the MLK Community Center
  • Oct. 2, 10:30 a.m. — Post-Disaster Recovery for Seniors at the Davis Community Center
  • Oct. 13, 10 a.m. — Post-Disaster Recovery for Seniors at the MLK Community Center

All sessions are free to attend and are designed to help participants better prepare before, during and after emergencies.
