Full Court Press analyst Kevin Schneider has the scoop on Brogden basketball event
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — If you watch our sports on WWAY on a regular basis you’re probably familiar with the basketball teams at Ashley, Hoggard, Laney and New Hanover. Those four schools will all be participating in this weekend’s Leon Brogden Holiday Tournament. On Thursday night WWAY Full Court Press analyst Kevin Schneider filled in the blanks on the four out of town teams that will be participating in the three day event on the campus of UNC Wilmington.
The three day event will start on Saturday, December 27th. It’ll wrap up on Tuesday, December 30th.
Daily admission will be $10 for adults and $7 for students. Daily admission includes up to 8 games a day.
Tournament passes will be available for $25 for adults and $15 for students. There will be 24 games played on the UNCW campus over the duration of the Brogden Tournament.
Web Guthrie is the new boys head coach at Ashley. His Screaming Eagles will open against a familiar foe. It’ll be Ashley vs. the Whiteville Wolfpack on Saturday Trask Coliseum. WWAY Full Court Press analyst Kevin Schneider has loads of respect for Whiteville. “In Whiteville you have Shaun Kirk, the top player in the area,” Schnider said. “He’s a top 10 player in the state of North Carolina in 2015 and he’s receiving mid to high major recruitment.”
Hoggard will be playing Bullis at the Brogden. Will the Vikings by bullish on Bullis? “It’s a great matchup for Hoggard facing off against Bullis,” Schneider told us. “They’re a 3 time IAC champion. It’s the second top league up there in DC, and they’ve been dominant for the last 3 years with about 5 division one prospects. It’s a contrast in styles. Bullis likes to get up into you defensively and Hoggard likes to slow it down with coach queen running his sets. That’s a first round matchup that is very intriguing.”
New Hanover is a team to keep an eye on at the Brogden. They’re capable of making some noise. The Wildcats will open with the Lexington Wildcats from South Carolina. “Lexington always has traditionally good teams. They play fast pace. The guard for them is Mike Morris, a division 2 low major guard.”
The first round finale on Saturday at the Brogden will feature the Laney Buccaneers. Nathan Faulk’s squad will have their hands full with one of the best 3-A teams in the state… It’s undefeated Gastonia Ashbrook. “Laney will be facing one of the better bigs in the class of 2016 with Isaiah Whaley. He’s 6-9, high major recruit that a lot of majors are looking at. They play Laney in the first round and Whaley is somebody at Trask Coliseum that you might want to go check out.”
