Future GLOW Academy students build relationships through robots
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Girls Leadership Academy of Wilmington, GLOW Academy, hosted a learning circle at UNCW Saturday and it was all about robotics.
Girls were first introduced to Lego Mindstorms and computer programming. They were able to make their own robot move around. Other topics included smart cars, self driving/parking cars, and sensors.
This is one of many they do throughout the year designed to introduce the program to fifth grade girls.
Principal Laura Hunter says this is an opportunity to build community, build relationships and make sure the girls feel comfortable each other before to join the school next year.
“Our mission is to help kids build community and to be successful in whatever path they choose by fostering strong sisterhood bonds and really emphasizing science, math, and engineering,” Hunter said.”
“I get to see new people and some people that I have seen in the last learning circles,” fifth grader Audyaire Chevalier said. “It’s really like fun adventures I get to do before I go to middle school next year.”
This is one of six learning circles that are offered. Other locations included the Cape Fear Museum and Cape Fear Community College.
