Gastonia couple dies in wreck at police station

GASTONIA, NC (AP) — A 64-year-old Gastonia couple has died in a wreck in front of the police department.

Police say Grady Max Toomey and Kay Toomey died in the wreck about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

A witness told police the Toomey’s car ran a red light, ran into a grassy area and hit a tree and a utility pole. Witnesses said the vehicle was speeding before the wreck.

Police Sgt. Mike Lari says a small fire in the front of the car after the wreck did not affect the victims.
