Gingrich brings presidential campaign to Wilmington Wednesday

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Republican race for the White House comes to North Carolina tomorrow, as former House Speaker Newt Gingrich holds a rally at UNCW, according to his deputy press secretary. The event is scheduled for 3:30-4:30 p.m at Lumina Theatre.

The event was in question for a while this afternoon. State policy requires that any political campaign event or candidate appearance on a public campus be sponsored by a registered student organization, as state higher education institutions must maintain political neutrality. So UNCW’s College Republicans stepped up to serve as the sponsor.

Gingrich’s campaign has promised WWAY a one-on-one interview with the candidate. We’ll have that on WWAY NewsChannel 3 starting at 5 p.m.

Since a win in the South Carolina primary, Gingrich has lagged behind Republican front-runner Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum. He has show strong support in southern states, but Gingrich has not won a primary since Super Tuesday, when he won Georgia, the state he represented in the US House for 20 years.
