Girls charter school to open next week
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A one o fa kind charter school is gearing up to open its doors next week to 100 girls in the Wilmington area.
The Girls Leadership Academy of Wilmington, more commonly known as GLOW Academy is North Carolina’s first single-gender public charter school. Students start the school in the 6th grade and will finish when they graduate high school, which is the year 2023 for the first class. While students participated in a week-long summer school program to meet teachers, classes officially start Monday.
Teacher Canesha Jacobs said the school is unique for its collaborative learning environment.
“I think the biggest thing is that we are getting 100 students who all chose to be here and who are all really excited about what’s to come and it’s kind of cool that we’re all going about it together,” Jacobs said.
There is no cost to attend, but there is a wait list.
