Going Beyond the Pink to help those in need
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — According to the World Health Organization (WHO), breast cancer is the top cancer in women in the world and has its place in the Cape Fear. But a local organization is helping those affected.
“Going Beyond the Pink” is a local organization, focusing on educational programs and supporting the community and other pink organizations and they had their grand opening today.
“We’re excited to be able to connect others to those organizations and to help people find the resources they need in town and then also be a provider of resources as well,” Kara Kenan, the executive director, said.
The WHO says one in eight women and one in 1000 men get breast cancer. Kenan says those are numbers she sees here in the Cape Fear.
“We hear that it is rare among young women but I was 35 when I was diagnosed and I know lots of other young women who have also been diagnosed before the age of forty, before the age of fifty, so it’s not just a disease that affects the aging. It really can touch anyone,” Kenan said.
With their office officially open on Shipyard Boulevard, they are welcoming anyone and everyone to come in, to learn and get the help they need.
