Golfers: Muni renovations a hole-in-one
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — If you’re looking to make a hole-in-one, drive yourself over to the Wilmington Municipal Golf Course. After five months and $1.5 million, the course is once again open to the public.
The ribbon cutting for the renovated course happened Wednesday, but golfers were allowed to tee off today.
It’s a golf course full of tradition.
“I’ve been playing here at this golf course for more than 65 years,” golfer Gene Smith said. “I remember when this golf course had sand greens.”
“I’ve been coming here a long time. Maybe, almost 30 years,” fellow golfer Jim Martin said.
Regulars had to take several months off, but now the renovations are finally complete.
“It feels great,” Golf Pro David Donovan said. “I mean we were down for five months and dealing with all the issues with construction and growing, and what-have-you, but I am so happy to see the golfers back out here again.”
From doubling the greens, to restoring the bunkers, golf cart paths and tee boxes; golfers say the new Muni is on par with some of the best courses in the Cape Fear.
“The course is in great shape, and we just love it,” golfer Richard Allinson said.
Allinson was thrilled to be one of the first to take a swing at the new course.
“We were the first tee time off this morning, and the greens are magnificent, they are twice as big as they used to be. The course is in great shape, and we just love it,” Allinson said.
Golfers say you can’t beat the price or the quality of the muni now that renovations are complete. But if you want to check it out, you better hurry. Donovan says spots are filling up fast.
