Good Shepherd Center offering food to community after fire
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Good Shepherd Center is expanding its food giveaway program to the victims of the Everybody’s Supermarket fire in Wilmington.
On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, community members can come to Good Shepherd to get free pastries, breads, produce and other healthy items. This is in addition to the free breakfast and lunch that Good Shepherd’s soup kitchen offers Monday through Friday.
Executive director Katrina Knight hopes that Good Shepherd can help keep the neighborhood from becoming a food desert.
“We saw those black clouds,” Knight said. “Even from afar, we knew it was really close to the shelter and we hate it for all the folks that were affected. We’re grateful that no one was hurt, but we know that, for the foreseeable future, a lot of our neighbors are gonna have a harder time accessing the healthy foods that they need.”
Knight said that the center has enough volunteers to handle the extra traffic, but food donations are always welcome.
