Good Shepherd Center opening doors to those in need during Hurricane Matthew
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — While most people are prepping their homes for Hurricane Matthew, others across The Cape Fear are seeking shelter.
Shelter that will be made available thanks to the Good Shepherd Center. While they help those in need year round, it is times like these that matter most.
Volunteers got together early Wednesday afternoon to go over what they will need for the next few days. They put together an emergency list, which includes everything from food and water, to plans to get people to and from various shelters.
They are also stepping up communication with those in need to make sure they’re aware of what’s happening.
Executive Director Katrina Knight said, “In a time of hurricane weather, you know our immediate focus is on people’s safety naturally. But it’s no different than any other night of the year. Ya know, come in be safe and let us help you.”
Knight said she is grateful to have a safe place for people to seek shelter. She also said the building is equipped with hurricane shutters and a back up generator, two items that are crucial in situations like this.
