Gov. McCrory: New intermodal rail service ‘game changing’ for Wilmington
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Gov. Pat McCrory visited the Port City today to make a big announcement about a new rail service.
McCrory, along with officials with the NCDOT and CSX Corporation announced plans for the “Queen City Express,” a direct, intermodal rail service connecting Wilmington and Charlotte. The term “intermodal” refers to the combining of at least two modes of transportation, such as trains, trucks and ships, to deliver goods, according to a release from the governor’s office.
McCrory called the announcement “game changing” for Wilmington, Charlotte and the state. He also said this is one of the largest logistic infrastructure investments in our state’s history. Paul Cozza, the executive director of the North Carolina State Ports Authority, said they’re hoping this rail service brings in more jobs and higher-paying jobs. The pair spoke at the Port Tuesday afternoon.
The service will begin in September. This project is part of McCrory’s 25-year vision for transportation in the state, Transportation Secretary Nick Tennyson said in the news release.
“Enhancing North Carolina’s rail service will decrease transportation costs for businesses and provide numerous statewide economic and environmental benefits,” Tennyson said.
The release said CSX will eventually provide direct access from the Port of Wilmington to the Carolina Connector intermodal terminal in Edgecombe County. That terminal was also announced today. Officials said that facility is expected to create 1,500 jobs throughout the Tar Heel state.
McCrory said he believes this project will also encourage businesses to set up shop in the Cape Fear.
“It’ll save businesses money in the transport of their goods and services. And that’s what it’s all about. You gotta give them a good return on their investments,” McCrory said.
