Governor: Johnston County site isn’t viable for CSX terminal

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Gov. Pat McCrory says a Johnston County side selected for a $150 million intermodal terminal is no longer a viable option.

In a statement issued Tuesday, McCrory spokesman Graham Wilson says the governor bases that decision partially on opposition by local officials.

CSX said earlier this month that it wanted to build the terminal off Interstate 95. The railroad company based in Jacksonville, Florida, said the project could create as many as 1,500 jobs statewide by 2035.

The terminal would transfer shipping containers between trucks and trains.

The project ran into opposition from residents and county commissioners, who last week called for alternative sites that can be used to build the hub.

The Associated Press left a phone message and sent an email to a CSX spokeswoman for comment.
