Grand jury decision expected in case of murdered pregnant Marine

JACKSONVILLE (AP) — A grand jury in Jacksonville is expected to decide today whether to indict a Marine corporal suspected of killing a 20-year-old pregnant colleague who once
accused him of rape.

Onslow County District Attorney Dewey Hudson says the grand jury is expected to consider formally charging Cesar Laurean in the disappearance and death of Lance Corporal Maria Lautherbach.

Investigators found Lauterbach’s burned remains and those of her child in a fire pit in Laurean’s back yard earlier this month. She had been missing since mid-December.

Lauterbach was eight months pregnant when she disappeared.

Authorities think Laurean has fled to Mexico. A man identified as his cousin says he saw Laurean there earlier this week.

An autopsy shows Lauterbach died from a blow to the head.
