Grand re-opening for Oak Island Pier
It had already been open for a week, but Saturday was the grand re-opening for what used to the Yaupon Pier and is now known as the Oak Island Pier.
There were volleyball tournaments and horseshoe competitions out on the beach by its base, and of course there were plenty of fishing rods out in the water.
Operator Tom Thomes said today’s large turnout is an indication that business will continue to grow. “Well I don’t see anything but up. Once school gets out we’ll just be cover up and this end of the beach is going to grow. We’ll bring a lot of people, and generally family people and kids to the beach.”
The town of Oak Island is leasing the pier until it can secure financing to buy it.
Thomes said future events at the pier could include a sand castle competition and bikini contest as soon as Memorial Day weekend.
