Grandparents as primary caregivers

Sunday, September 7th, was Grandparents Day, the day to honor our parent’s parents. The U.S. Census Bureau reports two and a half million grandparents have more responsibilities and are the primary caregivers for their grandchildren.

Rosa Foster has four grandchildren. She does not just see them on weekends and holidays, they live with her full-time. 19-year-old Rakim moved in when he was 2, then came twin girls, and finally Raquel.

“They taught me a lot, I became a real juggler,” said Rosa.

Rosa was awarded custody of her daughter’s children.

“It’s not been a picnic all the time, it’s been hard,” said Ms. Foster.

Psychologist Nadine Kaslow said grandparents can often experience financial, emotional and physical stress when taking on such a challenge.

Kaslow said, “It can compromise their health and you often see people having aches and pains, or sort of headaches and stomach aches.”

Rosa remembers years when she did not get much sleep as she worked two jobs – putting her own life on hold.

“Make sure you’re up for the challenge because if you’re not you’re going to break some kids hearts,” stated Rosa.

Now that the children are older she’s seeing the rewards.

Ms. Foster said, “I wouldn’t have it any other way. They’re my grandkids and I love them.”
