Grant to help restore historic schoolhouse
PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A historic schoolhouse in Pender county is getting a makeover with the help of a national grant. The Canetuck School in Currie is one of eight Rosenwald schools around the country awarded a $40,000 grant today from the National Trust for Historic Preservation and Lowe’s.
Rosenwald schools were built in the early 20th century to improve the quality of public education for African-Americans during segregation.
The renovated Canetuck School will expand senior services to include fitness and health programs and also house continuing education classes. The work is expected to be done next year.
