UPDATE: Wilmington burger place closed after grease fire

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)— A Wilmington fast-food joint is closed, and there’s no word on when it will reopen after a fire Tuesday night.

Wilmington Fire Department spokesman, David Hines, said responded to a fire at Checkers Drive-In on Oleander Drive and Dawson street a little before 6 p.m. Hines said a grease fire started and spread the exhaust duct system and continued burning grease build-up in the exhaust.

He said crews went in through the top of the building to get to the fire, and were able to put it out in about 10 minutes, but not before the fire caused $30,000 worth of damage to the ventilation and extinguishing systems, and the roof.

Hines added that no one was hurt.
