Guilford student misses graduation when baby comes early

GREENSBORO, NC (AP) – A student missed graduation at Guilford College last weekend.

But Juliet Smith of Kinderhooks, New York, graduated anyway Saturday when school officials brought a ceremony to the Greensboro hospital where she gave birth to her son, Milo, late Friday. Milo was not due until June 9.

The school said in a statement that an associate English professor pushed Juliet’s wheelchair into a classroom as she carried her son.

Another professor played “Pomp and Circumstance” on his tuba. Former student affairs administrator Aaron Fetrow delivered a 20-second version of his graduation speech for the new mother and her family.

School officials then awarded her the degree and two Guilford College baby bibs.

Graduates cheered in the on-campus ceremony Saturday when Smith’s name was called, even though she wasn’t there.
